After this, Ram created a monkey army and attacked Lanka to rescue Mother Sita. Ravana was killed by Ram in this war. At this time, Lord Ram’s 14 years of exile also came to an end. After killing Ravana, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya. To welcome him, people welcomed him by lighting lamps everywhere in the entire state. The darkness became completely illuminated by these lamps.
Since then, people celebrate the festival of Diwali by lighting up lights everywhere every year to commemorate the anniversary of Ram’s return to Ayodhya, which continues till today as per the tradition.
Apart from this, it is also believed that after the churning of the ocean, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, appeared on this day. Regarding Diwali, some people believe that on this day Pandavas returned after 12 years of exile, while some people consider it to be the day of coronation of King Vikramaditya.
There is a belief associated with Buddhism regarding Diwali that on this day their beloved Lord Gautam Buddha returned to his birthplace Kapilvastu after 18 years. It is believed that his followers welcomed him by lighting lamps on that day, since then people associated with this religion celebrate this holy festival by lighting lamps in their homes on this day.
Similarly, people associated with Jainism believe that their 24th Tirthankar Lord Mahavir attained Nirvana on the day of Diwali in Pawapuri, Bihar.
