On 29 January, one of the fundamentalists, a man of about thirty years of age named Nathuram Godse, reached Delhi armed with a pistol. The next day at around 5 pm, 78-year-old Gandhi, weak due to fasting, was being helped by his nieces in the garden of Birla House to go to the prayer meeting, when Nathuram Godse emerged from the crowd and while saluting him, shot Gandhi three times from a very close range. Why was Mahatma Gandhi assassinated?

Gandhi’s assassins and their supporters tried to justify the murder on the following arguments –

Gandhi was a supporter of the idea of a separate state for the Muslims. In a way, Gandhi was responsible for the creation of the country of Pakistan.

Gandhiji fasted to force the Indian government to release the amount of Rs. 55 crores due to Pakistan despite Pakistani aggression in Kashmir.

The belligerence of the Muslims was the result of Mahatmaji’s policy of appeasement.

The assassination of Gandhiji was the result of decades of systematic brain-washing. Mahatma Gandhi had become a thorn in the side of the orthodox Hindus and with time this resentment started turning into a fear.

Starting from the year 1934, about six attempts were made to kill Gandhiji in a period of 14 years. The last attempt made by Godse on 30-1-48 was successful. Godse could not participate in the previous two attempts.

When the failed attempts of 1934, 1944 and 1946 were made, the matter of proposal regarding partition and release of Rs. 55 crores to be given to Pakistan did not even exist. The conspiracy to eliminate Gandhiji was conceived long ago.
